Winslow Homer was employed by Harper’s Weekly for $30 a day
and instructed to “record a military skirmish.” Although Homer
went on two trips with the Army of the Potomac and a third one
independently, it is believed that he never encountered any battles.
Many of his illustrations depict scenes of camp life, soldiers marching
to the front, or life at home, rather than depictions of casualties.
