Commentary

Recalling the grandeur of 19th-century views a century later, Roger Minick's view of Yosemite adds a contemporary twist by including a tourist standing before the breath-taking Inspiration Point, her head wrapped in a scarf that replicates the scene before her. Here, the mythical American frontier is commodified and reduced to commercial logo. Underscoring photography’s powerful role in shaping and conveying our ideas about our world and ourselves, Minick’s photograph suggests that our knowledge of the land comes more from images than actual experience.
