Exhibitions: Contemplating the View: American Landscape PhotographsObject Information
Influenced by Alfred Stieglitz, who believed photographs could be metaphors for feelings or emotional truths, Minor White, in turn, influenced countless photographers. Known for his dramatic teaching style, which was heavily imbued with mysticism, he gained something of a cult-following as a teacher at Rochester Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the San Francisco Art Institute. White proposed that photographs could serve as a mirror of the self, conveying personal and spiritual experience. Rather than being purely representational, his images of nature are abstracted and enigmatic.
