Object Information

Gertrude Käsebier was one of the most successful portrait photographers of the first decade of the 20th century. At the time, female photographers were thought to have a more intuitive understanding of a sitter’s personality and emotions than their male counterparts. Celebrated too as a fine art photographer, Käsebier was a member of two pictorialist groups, Linked Ring in London and Photo-Secession in New York. In 1905, Camera Work, a quarterly photography journal (1903–17) founded by Alfred Stieglitz, published six photogravures by Käsebier. This one depicts Minnie Ashley (1878–1946), an actor, sculptor, and author. Active in European relief efforts in both world wars, she was awarded the French Legion of Honor for her World War I work.
