Multimedia artist Jon Kessler’s kinetic light sculptures are influenced by our image-obsessed culture and surveillance-dominated society. Shape of Things to Come is one of Kessler’s earliest multimedia works and appears to draw on H. G. Wells’s popular and prescient science fiction book of the same title, published in 1933.
Kessler’s sculpture is visually complex, combining tacky materials, such as tiny plastic and hand-carved wooden figures, spinning on motors with flashing colored bulbs, all framed by a hulking metal box. Belying their humble materials and seemingly clumsy construction, Kessler’s sculptures pack an emotional punch and often provide incisive social commentary.
