Exhibitions: 4 x 4Object Information
This intimate work on paper is part of Cameron Martin’s series of small-scale drawings titled Reticulations. Drawn in permanent marker over a period of three years, these works represent a radical departure from the artist’s 15-year-long production of large scale photo-based landscape paintings, one of which is in the Addison’s collection.
Each work in Reticulations is composed of intersecting lines and woven patterns that conjure networks both physical and virtual. Martin’s methodical and precisely placed vertical lines create vibrant, luminous, and undulating fields of color that variously evoke sound waves, textile patterning, data mapping, and electrical currents and frequencies. One critic notes that Martin’s drawings “work on you as you work on them,” perhaps due to the ways colors mix optically within the frame—a mixing that is entirely illusory.
