Object Information

A famous muse in the history of photography, Charis Wilson played an integral role in Edward Weston’s career. As his lover, wife, companion, driver, and model, and the author of the most definitive writings on his work, she left an indelible mark on the photographer’s practice. Following the sinuous curves of Wilson’s body with his lens, Weston created a series of images that are both an ode to her and a continuation of the abstract visual language he developed in the 1920s in his photographic studies of shells. Weston’s treatment of her form as still life or as  geomorphological landscape element underscores his deep indebtedness to Wilson, whose effervescent spirit and supple figure alike inspired him to create some of the most eloquent works of his career.
