<SPAN><SPAN STYLE="color:#878888">Gallery label for </SPAN><SPAN STYLE="font-style:italic;color:#878888">Walls and Beams, Rooms and Dreams</SPAN><SPAN STYLE="color:#878888">, January 23 - July 31, 2016<BR/></SPAN><BR/>A pristine white house, barn, and outbuildings are perched on a rise along a country road, the property delineated by rail fences, the carefully groomed front yard peopled by two small figures watching as a horse-drawn buggy starts down the drive lined with young fir trees to the white picket fence and gate, the sun shining warmly on the inviting homestead.  This idealized and idyllic scene is one of only a handful of extant paintings by the little-known, German-born painter Edward Kranich. Settling in New Jersey around 1854, the artist advertised his services as a landscape and decorative painter who could “sketch and paint with fidelity, the beautiful and romantic scenery” of Morris County; likewise he assured “gentlemen desiring to have views of their houses and grounds” that he could do so at a modest price.   This charming portrait of a happy homestead was sure to satisfy its proud and discerning owner, while its meticulous execution provides us with a window into the tranquil rural life of nineteenth century New Jersey.  <BR/><BR/>Susan C.
